A men's engagement ring costs from €320 to about €2,700 at Laveran Paris, depending on whether you choose a plain 18k gold band or a band set with lab-grown diamonds. The most popular styles are a simple 2 to 3 mm band, a diamond wedding band and, made to order, a signet ring. More and more men wear a ring from the engagement onward, often the same one they keep after the wedding. This guide compares styles, widths, metals and real prices, then answers the practical questions: ring size, how to wear it with a wedding band, and how to give one.

Do men wear engagement rings?
Yes, and it is increasingly common, even though it is not the tradition in France. For a long time, only the bride-to-be received a ring; the man waited for his wedding band. Elsewhere, customs differ: in Sweden, Chile, Iceland and Brazil, both partners traditionally exchange rings at the engagement. Today, many couples in France and beyond choose two rings, for the sake of equality or simply because he wants to wear a symbol of his commitment too.
We have a full article on this question and its history: do men wear engagement rings? Here, we focus on the practical side: which style, what budget, what size.
What styles of men's engagement ring are there?
There is no set "men's engagement ring" the way the solitaire is for women: most men choose a wedding-band style ring. Five families come up again and again with our clients.
The plain band: comfort fit or flat
This is the most worn men's ring. A court (comfort) band has a rounded profile that is comfortable every day; a flat band has a crisp, graphic surface. At Laveran, the Jonc Parisien men's band hides a small diamond inside the ring, seen only by the person wearing it: a discreet touch for an engagement. The Demi Jonc Prestige takes the same idea with a curved line, and the Fidélis is a polished flat band with no stone.
The men's diamond band
For a men's diamond engagement ring, a diamond-set band is the most natural choice. The Monceau diamond band is designed for men and women alike: a polished band dotted with lab-grown round diamonds set at regular intervals, from 2.5 to 4 mm wide. Men who like geometric lines also look at bands with baguette diamonds, which feel more architectural than round stones.
The half-eternity band and the hidden diamond
A half-eternity band is set only across the top of the ring. For a man, it has two advantages: fewer diamonds, so a gentler price, and a smooth underside that is more comfortable when gripping a steering wheel or a racket. A diamond set inside the band, as on the Jonc Parisien, takes discretion one step further.
The pavé band
A wide band fully paved with small diamonds is the most brilliant option. Our pavé bands come in classic widths; for a wider, more masculine pavé band, the ring is designed with our custom design studio, on a quote.
The signet ring
The signet ring, engraved with initials or set with a diamond, is enjoying a real comeback and can absolutely serve as an engagement ring. It is often worn on the pinky, which leaves the ring finger free for the wedding band. Laveran does not offer one in the catalog: it is made to order. For a more heavily set men's ring, here are a few diamond bands from the collection, with IGI or GIA certified lab-grown diamonds:
| Band | Diamonds | H/VS2 | F/VS1 | D/VVS1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Georges V | 0.50 carat, pavé on a rail, flat profile | €704 | €736 | €792 |
| Concorde round diamonds | 0.50 carat, diamonds on a rail | €704 | €736 | €792 |
| Montaigne baguette diamonds | 1.20 carat, 14 baguettes spaced with gold | €2,384 | €2,544 | €2,704 |
| Concorde horizontal baguettes | 1.20 carat, channel-set baguettes | €2,384 | €2,544 | €2,704 |
These prices are the same in 18k white, yellow or rose gold and in 950 platinum: at Laveran, platinum costs the same as gold. A lab-grown diamond (also called a lab-created or synthetic diamond) has the same composition, hardness and sparkle as a natural diamond, for up to 80% less at equal quality. Installment payments are available with Alma. See the full selection: diamond wedding bands; and for a men's wedding band without stones, our complete men's wedding band guide.
What width should a men's ring be?
2 to 3 mm for a discreet ring or slim fingers, 3 to 4 mm for a bolder look on a larger hand. Width changes how the ring looks, but also its price and comfort:
- 2 mm: very slim, almost invisible; ideal if he has never worn a ring.
- 2.5 mm: the sweet spot, discreet without looking fragile.
- 3 mm: the most masculine width of our men's bands, crisp on a medium to large hand.
- 3.5 to 4 mm: available on the Monceau band; anything wider is custom made.
A tip from the workshop: the wider the band, the tighter it feels. If you are between two sizes for a band of 3 mm or more, go up. Think about your partner's engagement ring too: the same width, metal or diamond shape is enough to make a matching pair without being identical.
Gold, platinum or silver: which metal?
18k gold and platinum are the metals for a ring you keep for life; silver is a more affordable placeholder.
- 18k yellow gold: warm and classic, it pairs with gold watches and olive skin.
- 18k white gold: the classic choice for a modern men's ring, it matches a steel watch.
- 18k rose gold: more unexpected, often chosen to match a partner's ring.
- 950 platinum: naturally white, dense and durable. At Laveran, a men's platinum band costs the same as gold.
- Sterling silver 925: €90 to €140 on our men's bands. A silver men's engagement ring works as a promise ring, but silver scratches and tarnishes faster than gold.
How do you find a man's ring size?
The average men's ring size in France is between 60 and 64 (about US 9 to 10.5), but only measuring his finger lets you order the right one. Three reliable methods:
- measure the inside diameter of a ring he already wears on the same finger;
- wrap a string around the finger, then measure the length in millimeters (the circumference in mm is the French size);
- use our free ring sizer, or get measured in a showroom.
Measure at the end of the day, when the finger is slightly larger, and on the right hand: the dominant hand is often a little wider. All the details, with a conversion chart: how to find a man's ring size. And if the size is not perfect, resizing is free for life.
Engagement ring and wedding band: how do men wear both?
In France, a man wears his engagement ring on the left ring finger, and he has three options on the wedding day.
- Keep a single ring: the engagement ring becomes the wedding band. This is a very common choice for men, and the reason many pick a wedding-band style from the start.
- Stack both on the same finger: the wedding band at the base of the finger, the engagement ring above it. Choose two slim bands (2 to 2.5 mm) to stay comfortable.
- Switch hands or fingers: the wedding band on the left ring finger, the engagement ring on the right ring finger, or a signet ring on the pinky.
Customs vary by country and religion: some men wear their wedding band on the right hand. To learn what each finger means: which finger should a man wear a ring on?
Giving an engagement ring to a man
Whoever gives the ring chooses the moment: in return for a proposal, during a mutual proposal, or by proposing yourself. A few tips to get the surprise right:
- Start from what he already wears: the color of his watch suggests the metal, his style (understated or bold) the width and setting.
- Keep it simple: for a man who has never worn a ring, a 2.5 mm court or flat band is the safest bet.
- Have it engraved: engraving is complimentary. A date, initials or a word inside the band makes the ring one of a kind.
- Find his size discreetly: borrow a ring he wears, ask someone close to him, or pick an average size: resizing is free for life.
- Plan ahead: made-to-order production takes 2 to 3 weeks. Some models are in stock or can be made express in a few days; the lead time is confirmed at your appointment.
You can also come together: choosing both engagement rings as a couple has become a moment in its own right. Every Laveran ring ships free, insured and hand-delivered, with a lifetime warranty and returns within 30 days.
