Lab-grown diamonds: the complete guide to understanding and choosing well

Definition, production, the 4Cs, price, certification, care: Maison Laveran tells you everything about lab-grown diamonds — the most ethical and accessible stone, with no compromise on brilliance.

Updated June 10, 2026 · Written and reviewed by Maison Laveran's gemologists · 12-minute read

The lab-grown diamond has become one of the most beautiful revolutions in contemporary fine jewelry. At once ethical, accessible and visually identical to a natural diamond, it appeals to a growing number of couples choosing their engagement ring. But what exactly is a lab-grown diamond? How is it made, how do you read its quality, and what does it cost? This guide answers all your questions.

The lab-grown diamond: the same brilliance, a different conscience

What is a lab-grown diamond?

A lab-grown diamond — also called a laboratory-created or cultured diamond — is a real diamond. It is made of pure crystallized carbon, exactly like a diamond mined from the earth. Its atomic structure, its hardness (10 on the Mohs scale, the maximum), its refractive index and its brilliance are strictly identical.

The only difference lies in its origin: whereas a natural diamond formed deep in the Earth's mantle over billions of years, a lab-grown diamond is grown in a few weeks by reproducing those same conditions of pressure and temperature. It is neither an imitation nor a "fake" diamond like cubic zirconia or moissanite: it is a diamond, full stop.

Same carbon, same brilliance, same eternity — a different conscience.

How is a lab-grown diamond made?

Two cutting-edge technologies make it possible to grow a diamond in a laboratory. Both start from a tiny diamond seed and produce a rough stone, which is then cut and polished with the same skills as traditional fine jewelry.

In both cases, the result is an authentic diamond, indistinguishable from a natural diamond — even for a gemologist with the naked eye.

Rough, then cut: the same skills as traditional fine jewelry

Lab-grown or natural diamond: the comparison

Physically, nothing separates them. The differences lie elsewhere: origin, environmental impact and price.

The 4Cs: how to read a diamond's quality

Utilisez cette zone de texte pour partager des informations sur votre marque avec vos clients. Décrivez un produit, partagez des annonces ou accueillez vos clients dans votre magasin.

The 4Cs: carat, color, clarity and cut

1. Carat — the weight

The carat (ct) measures the weight of the stone: 1 carat = 0.20 gram. The higher the carat, the larger and rarer the diamond. But be careful: at equal carat weight, a well-cut stone will look larger and more brilliant than a poorly proportioned one. Carat isn't everything.

2. Color — the whiteness

Color grades the absence of tint on an international scale from D (perfectly colorless, the purest and most sought after) to Z (distinctly yellow-tinted). For a bright, luminous solitaire, grades D, E and F give the best result.

3. Clarity — the purity

Clarity measures the presence of inclusions, those tiny internal "birthmarks". The scale runs from IF (flawless even under 10× magnification) to I (inclusions visible to the naked eye). From grade VS upward, inclusions are invisible without a loupe: the best balance of brilliance and value.

4. Cut — the craftsmanship

Cut is the only one of the 4Cs that depends on the human hand — and by far the most decisive for brilliance. An "Excellent" cut captures light and returns it optimally; a mediocre cut dulls even the purest diamond. It is the cut that gives a diamond its fire.

Our advice: never compromise on cut. More than carat, it is what makes a diamond shine.

Beyond the 4Cs: fluorescence, fire and brilliance

Fluorescence

Some diamonds emit a faint bluish glow under UV light. When faint, it is invisible in daily life and has no effect; when too strong, it can give the stone a milky appearance. None to faint fluorescence is ideal.

Fire, brilliance and scintillation

These are the three components of sparkle. Brilliance is the white light reflected; fire, the flashes of color that burst out when the stone moves; scintillation, the play of sparkles. All three come from a perfectly proportioned cut.

Which diamond shape should you choose?

The shape (or cut) shapes the personality of the jewel. The most popular:

The round brilliant, cut for maximum sparkle

  • Round brilliant — the timeless classic, cut for maximum sparkle.
  • Oval — lengthens the finger and looks larger at equal carat weight.
  • Cushion — a square with rounded corners, vintage charm and soft light.
  • Pear — distinctive and feminine, elegant worn with the point toward the fingertip.
  • Emerald — rectangular with cut corners, sophisticated and architectural.
  • Princess & marquise — geometric and assertive, for strong personalities.

Certification: IGI and GIA

A serious diamond is a certified diamond. Every Laveran stone comes with a certificate issued by a world-renowned independent laboratory — IGI (International Gemological Institute) or GIA (Gemological Institute of America). This document precisely attests to your diamond's 4Cs and guarantees its authenticity.

Lab-grown diamonds also bear a laser micro-inscription on the girdle, invisible to the naked eye, linked to their certificate number: complete traceability.

How much does a lab-grown diamond cost?

Our method, in four reflexes:

  • Prioritize cut: it is what makes the stone shine. Aim for "Excellent" or "Very Good".
  • Choose color D–F for a brilliant white, down to G–H to optimize your budget.
  • Stay at VS or above for clarity that is invisible to the naked eye.
  • Adjust carat last, once the other three Cs are secured.

Above all, get expert guidance. Our diamond experts welcome you in the showroom or by video call to compare stones in hand.

How should you care for and clean your diamond?

A diamond dulls with soap film, creams and dust. To restore its brilliance:

  • Soak the piece for 15 minutes in warm soapy water (mild soap).
  • Brush gently with a soft-bristled brush, paying particular attention beneath the stone.
  • Rinse in clean water and dry with a lint-free cloth.
  • Avoid chemicals (chlorine, bleach) and remove your jewelry for housework or swimming.
  • Have the setting checked once a year by your jeweler.

Why choose an ethical diamond?

Diamond mining, even when regulated, remains a heavy industry: it consumes enormous quantities of water and fossil fuels, and disrupts ecosystems. A lab-grown diamond considerably reduces this footprint, while guaranteeing perfect traceability and no gray areas regarding the human conditions of extraction.

Choosing a lab-grown diamond means offering a symbol of love with nothing to reproach itself for — neither for the planet, nor for people.
