Lab-Grown Diamond vs Moissanite: What Are the Differences?

Lab-grown diamond vs moissanite – visual comparison of the two brilliant-cut stones side by side | Laveran Paris

Torn between a lab-grown diamond and a moissanite for your engagement ring, wedding band or a precious piece of jewelry? These two brilliant stones are winning over more and more buyers looking for ethical alternatives to natural diamonds. Yet they are fundamentally different — in composition, brilliance, hardness and value. In this article, Laveran Paris offers a complete, objective comparison to help you make the choice that truly suits you.

What is a lab-grown diamond?

A lab-grown diamond, also called a lab diamond or cultured diamond, is a stone created in a laboratory from pure carbon. Its chemical composition, crystal structure and optical properties are strictly identical to those of a natural diamond. The only difference lies in its origin: it forms in a controlled environment rather than deep within the Earth.

The two methods for producing a lab-grown diamond

There are two main techniques for producing a lab-grown diamond:

The HPHT method (High Pressure High Temperature) recreates natural geological conditions by subjecting carbon to extreme pressures and temperatures. It is one of the oldest methods and produces diamonds with characteristics entirely comparable to mined stones.

The CVD method (Chemical Vapor Deposition) deposits carbon atoms layer by layer onto a substrate, like molecular 3D printing. It allows precise control over the clarity and color of the resulting diamond.

At Laveran Paris, we carefully select our lab-grown diamonds from certified suppliers, guaranteeing each stone with an IGI or GIA certificate and a number laser-inscribed on the stone itself. To learn more about these certifications, see our dedicated article: IGI and GIA Certification for Lab-Grown Diamonds: Everything You Need to Know.

What is moissanite?

Moissanite is a gemstone in its own right, made of silicon carbide (SiC). It was first discovered in 1893 by the chemist Henri Moissan in a meteor crater in Arizona. Natural moissanite is extremely rare on Earth, so the moissanite used in jewelry is almost exclusively produced in a laboratory.

The distinctive characteristics of moissanite

Moissanite is known for its exceptional brilliance, even greater than a diamond's by some measures. This is explained by its higher refractive index (2.65 to 2.69 versus 2.42 for diamond), which creates an intense, colorful prismatic effect. This rainbow fire can be stunning or too flashy, depending on your taste.

Its hardness reaches 9.25 on the Mohs scale, making it one of the most durable stones in the world — just below diamond (10/10). It is therefore perfectly suited to everyday wear in jewelry.

Lab-grown diamond vs moissanite: a point-by-point comparison

Chemical composition

This is the fundamental difference between the two stones. A lab-grown diamond is 100% carbon, exactly like a natural diamond. Moissanite is made of silicon carbide (SiC), an entirely different material. The two stones are therefore not chemically interchangeable: one is a real diamond, the other is a distinct gemstone.

Brilliance and sparkle

Moissanite has a slightly higher refractive index than diamond, which gives it intense brilliance and very pronounced colored fire (light dispersed into rainbow colors). For some, this sparkle is spectacular. For others, it can look artificial in natural light, especially in larger sizes.

A lab-grown diamond, on the other hand, produces a pure white brilliance, with a sparkle that is both intense and elegant, and rigorously identical to that of a natural diamond. It is often the preferred brilliance for a classic, timeless engagement piece.

Diamond remains the hardest natural material known. In practice, however, the difference is minimal: both stones are perfectly suited to a ring worn every day.

Price

This is often the deciding factor. Moissanite is significantly less expensive than a lab-grown diamond of equivalent size and weight. Carat for carat, a moissanite can cost 5 to 10 times less than a lab-grown diamond.

Keep in mind, however, that moissanite is not a diamond: it will not be graded or certified according to the same criteria (the 4Cs do not apply in the same way). To understand lab-grown diamond prices in detail, see our guide: How Much Does a Lab-Grown Diamond Cost? The Complete 2026 Price Guide.

Value and resale

A lab-grown diamond is graded according to the same criteria as a natural diamond: the 4Cs (carat, color, clarity, cut). It is certified by recognized international laboratories (IGI, GIA). Moissanite does not benefit from the same certification system, and its perceived value on the resale market is far more limited.

Identification: can you tell them apart?

To the naked eye, it is practically impossible to tell a lab-grown diamond from a quality moissanite. A gemologist equipped with a specific tester, however, can easily distinguish them: standard diamond testers (thermal conductivity) can sometimes confuse moissanite and diamond, but advanced electrical conductivity devices tell them apart without fail.

Which stone should you choose for an engagement ring?

Choose a lab-grown diamond if…

  • You want to give a real diamond, with the same chemical and physical properties as a natural diamond.
  • You value official certification (IGI, GIA) and full traceability for your stone.
  • The timeless, classic look of a pure white sparkle matters to you.
  • You want a piece of jewelry that keeps a recognized, universal value.

Choose moissanite if…

  • You are looking for the lowest possible price for maximum visual impact.
  • You love intense colored flashes and a very pronounced sparkle.
  • You are not attached to the idea of a "real diamond" and see moissanite as a gemstone in its own right.

FAQ – Lab-grown diamond vs moissanite

Is a lab-grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. A lab-grown diamond is 100% carbon, with the same crystal structure, the same hardness and the same optical properties as a natural diamond. The only difference is its origin: it is created in a laboratory rather than mined from the ground.

Is moissanite a diamond?
No. Moissanite is a distinct gemstone made of silicon carbide (SiC). It looks like a diamond but shares neither its chemical composition nor its crystal structure.

How can you tell a lab-grown diamond from a moissanite?
To the naked eye, it is very difficult. A gemologist can tell them apart using an electrical conductivity gem tester. Moissanite also produces a more pronounced rainbow sparkle than diamond, visible in certain lighting.

Is moissanite as durable as a lab-grown diamond?
Moissanite has a hardness of 9.25/10 on the Mohs scale, versus 10/10 for diamond. Both are suitable for everyday wear, but diamond remains slightly more scratch-resistant over the long term.

Why is a lab-grown diamond more expensive than moissanite?
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond, certified according to the 4Cs and graded by international gemological laboratories. Its production process is more costly, and its perceived value is far higher than that of moissanite, which remains a different gemstone that cannot be certified to the same standards.

Can moissanite be set in a classic engagement ring?
Yes, technically moissanite can be set in any mount. However, if you are looking for an engagement ring with strong symbolic and heirloom value, a certified lab-grown diamond will always be more appropriate.

Is a lab-grown diamond ethical?
Yes. Unlike a mined diamond, a lab-grown diamond creates no environmental impact from land extraction and raises no human rights concerns. This is one of the main reasons Laveran Paris chose to make it its specialty.
