High Jewelry: The Evolution of a Thriving Global Market

Over the past few decades, the market for fine jewelry, or luxury jewelry, has evolved significantly, driven in particular by internationalization.

Before going any further, here is some useful background on the fine jewelry market.

What is fine jewelry?

What is the difference between "joaillerie" and "bijouterie"?

In French, "joaillerie" and "bijouterie" are terms that are often confused. Though very similar at first glance, there are real differences between them.

  • Joaillerie (gem jewelry): the art of setting precious stones (diamond, ruby, sapphire, etc.) in a way that showcases their value and beauty. The jeweler uses various techniques, such as molding, lost-wax casting and stone setting.

  • Bijouterie (metal jewelry): the making of jewelry, whether in precious metal or not. The jeweler works the metal and must show imagination to create artistic and sometimes one-of-a-kind pieces.

These two crafts are quite distinct, yet just as complementary when it comes to creating breathtaking jewelry.

Why "haute joaillerie"?

High jewelry stands apart from ordinary jewelry through its level of exclusivity, quality and price. Whether a single piece or a unique collection, it is generally made to measure and handcrafted by highly skilled artisans. The materials used, such as diamonds, rubies and other precious stones, are of exceptional quality, and the designs are generally bolder.

A jewelry collection offered by a jewelry house takes every form imaginable — rings, earrings, watches and more — allowing even the wildest dreams to come to life.

Who are the great jewelers?

The biggest names are renowned jewelry houses, most of which have made their home on Place Vendôme in Paris.

Among them are, notably, the following:

  • Chanel, the French luxury house that combines high jewelry and haute couture.

  • Bulgari (or Bvlgari), the Italian luxury jeweler that shapes a unique style through spectacular combinations of color and volume.

  • Chopard, which weaves together the talents of its many artisans with the creativity of its co-president, Caroline Scheufele.

  • Chaumet, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bucherer, Boucheron, Breguet, etc.

How has the fine jewelry market evolved over time?

High jewelry made its entrance under the reign of Louis XIV, in the 17th century, thanks to his love of lavish jewels. Since then, the fine jewelry market has evolved significantly over time, marked by changing trends, shifting consumer preferences and technological advances.

In recent decades, it has become increasingly international. The major jewelry houses have expanded their global presence by opening new boutiques and taking part in international fairs and events to present their jewelry collections. This has allowed them to target a wealthy international clientele, unconcerned with price and drawn by the exclusivity and prestige associated with a high jewelry collection.

What challenges and opportunities does the sector face in today's economy?

Despite the instability of recent years, with the health crisis and competition, the high jewelry sector has rebounded strongly. It is expected to keep growing, notwithstanding the challenges it faces.

The challenges

  • Globalization, with its problems of access to resources and logistics.

  • Competition, which has intensified with the emergence of new players in the market and the rise of designer jewelry brands.

  • Customer relationships and the changing preferences of consumers, who are looking for unique, personalized pieces. Jewelers must offer bespoke jewelry creations and meet each client's specific needs.

  • Responsibility for the jewelry life cycle, for example through the use of recycled materials, fairly sourced materials, etc.

  • Human resources, since the trade relies on artisanal know-how that is difficult to pass on, and high jewelry production does not always take place in attractive locations.

The opportunities

  • Digitalization has opened up new possibilities for the market, as brands can now reach a wider audience through online sales and social media.

  • Technologies such as 3D modeling and printing have made it easier to design and manufacture new jewelry, making it possible to explore bolder, more innovative designs.

  • The secondhand market is also expected to take off. Giving unique pieces a second life, whether through resale or by renting a single piece or an entire jewelry collection, will help meet consumer expectations about the environmental impact of products. For example: earrings adorned with sumptuous rubies and diamonds, passed down from mothers to daughters and worn to a festival in Cannes, or a luxury watch handed down from father to son.

Challenges can also become opportunities for those who know how to rise to them brilliantly!
