1-Carat Lab-Grown Diamonds: What to Expect in Size and Price

1-carat lab-grown diamonds – The main cut shapes | Laveran Paris

The 1 carat is the absolute benchmark in the world of diamonds. It is the psychological threshold toward which most engagement projects converge, and the size that attracts the most questions and the highest expectations. But what does a 1-carat lab-grown diamond actually represent? How big does it really look on the finger? What sparkle can you expect from it? And what budget should you plan for depending on the quality you choose? At Laveran Paris, we guide clients through this decision every week. This complete guide answers all of these questions.

What 1 carat means: weight, dimensions and visual reality

The carat is a unit of weight — not size

A very common misconception is to confuse the carat with a diamond's visible size. In fact, the carat measures only the weight of the stone: 1 carat equals 0.20 gram. This weight does not translate the same way across different cut shapes, because each shape distributes its mass differently between the crown (the part visible from above) and the pavilion (the lower part held within the setting).

A 1-carat round brilliant diamond typically measures 6.4 to 6.5 mm in diameter. This is the most universal shape, and the one for which 1 carat offers the best balance between visual presence and an optimized cut profile. For lab-grown diamond engagement rings, it is the benchmark around which most projects are built.

Dimensions compared by cut shape

The cut shape is one of the most powerful levers for maximizing the visual impact of a 1-carat diamond, without changing the weight or the budget. Some elongated shapes, notably the oval, marquise and pear cuts, create an optical effect that enlarges the visible surface of the stone on the finger — what jewelers call the elongating effect.

Here is what a 1-carat lab-grown diamond looks like in practice, by shape:

Cut shape Approximate dimensions Visual effect
Round brilliant 6.4 × 6.4 mm Balanced benchmark, maximum sparkle
Oval 8.0 × 5.7 mm Lengthens the finger, strong presence
Marquise 10.0 × 5.0 mm Very elongated, spectacular effect
Cushion 5.8 × 5.6 mm Soft square, vintage style
Emerald 7.0 × 5.0 mm Clean, crisp lines, very elegant
Pear 9.0 × 5.8 mm Asymmetrical, feminine, original
Asscher 5.5 × 5.5 mm Art Deco, step-cut facets

Indicative dimensions: they vary according to the proportions of each stone. Click on a shape to see our guide.

If you would like to understand the specifics of each shape before making your choice, our diamond guide walks you through it step by step.

What you actually see on the finger

A 6.5 mm, 1-carat round brilliant lab-grown diamond is roughly the diameter of a small pea. On a finger of standard size (French ring size 52-54), it has a clear, confident presence without being ostentatious. It is the ideal size for anyone who wants a piece that is visible every day and reads well in any setting, without going overboard.

On slimmer fingers (French sizes 48-50), the visual effect is amplified: the stone will look larger. Conversely, on a wider finger, some clients prefer to go up to 1.2 or 1.5 carats to keep the same sense of presence. Our experts in the showroom can place a demonstration stone on your finger to give you a faithful preview before any decision.

The visual result: brilliance, fire and sparkle of a 1-carat lab-grown diamond

Sparkle identical to a natural diamond

One of the questions we hear most often is this: does a 1-carat lab-grown diamond really sparkle like a natural diamond? The answer is absolutely yes. Because a lab-grown diamond has exactly the same chemical composition and the same crystal structure as a natural diamond, its optical properties are identical: the same refractive index, the same dispersion of light, the same characteristic scintillation.

What determines the sparkle of a 1-carat diamond is not its origin but its cut. An Excellent or Ideal cut on a round brilliant ensures that every ray of light is returned to the viewer's eye with maximum efficiency. A mediocre cut, even on a high-quality diamond, will produce a dull, lifeless stone.

How color and clarity affect the result

For a 1-carat lab-grown diamond, color plays a visible role at this size. A D-F stone will be a pure, luminous white; a G-H stone remains very beautiful to the naked eye and offers remarkable value for money. Below I-J, a slight warm tint can start to become noticeable, especially in a white gold or platinum setting, which heightens the contrast.

As for clarity, at 1 carat, well-placed SI1 inclusions (that is, located at the edge of the table or hidden by the setting) remain invisible to the naked eye in the vast majority of cases. VS2 or VS1 clarity offers complete peace of mind. There is no need to aim for FL or VVS2 to get an impeccable result — unless you demand absolute perfection under a loupe.

The price of a 1-carat lab-grown diamond: what to expect

Price ranges in 2026

The 1 carat is the size at which the price difference between a natural diamond and a lab-grown diamond is most telling. For equivalent quality, the difference today regularly exceeds 70 to 80% in favor of the lab-grown diamond.

Here are the ranges observed on the French market in 2026, for a certified loose stone:

Quality

Color / Clarity

Estimated price

Premium

D-F / FL-VVS2

€2,800 – €4,200

Standard

G-I / VVS2-SI1

€1,200 – €2,400

Commercial

J-L / SI2-I1

€600 – €1,100

These prices are for the loose stone only. For a complete piece — an 18k gold solitaire engagement ring with a standard-quality 1-carat lab-grown diamond — here are our prices at Laveran Paris, 18k gold setting included. The price is the same whatever the diamond shape.

What makes the price vary at the same carat weight

At an identical 1 carat, two stones can carry very different prices. Three factors explain the gap:

The cut shape: round brilliant cuts command a premium because they require greater loss of rough material during cutting. Fancy shapes (oval, pear, marquise) are generally 10 to 20% less expensive for equal characteristics — which sometimes gives access to a higher color or clarity for the same budget. At Laveran, however, the price of our solitaires is the same for every shape.

Certification: a GIA- or IGI-certified diamond is more expensive than an uncertified one, but it is an essential investment. Certification guarantees the accuracy of the stated characteristics and is your only objective proof of the stone's quality. At Laveran Paris, every diamond in our selection is certified by a recognized laboratory.

The manufacturing process: with equivalent characteristics, a CVD diamond and an HPHT diamond are similarly priced. Some suppliers position CVD slightly higher for very high clarity grades (FL-VVS1), owing to better process control at those grades. In practice, the choice between the two depends more on aesthetic preferences than on budget.

Choosing a setting for a 1-carat lab-grown diamond

How the setting affects visual perception

The setting is not neutral: it can amplify or reduce the visual effect of a 1-carat diamond. A prong setting, with 4 or 6 fine prongs, exposes the stone as much as possible and lets light flow freely — it is the classic choice for a solitaire ring and the one that best showcases the brilliance of a round brilliant.

A pavé or halo setting, with smaller diamonds around the center stone, creates a spectacular amplifying effect: your 1 carat looks larger, surrounded by a halo of light. It is an excellent choice for those who want to maximize visual presence while optimizing the budget devoted to the center stone.

Metal: white gold, yellow gold or platinum?

The choice of metal has a direct effect on how the diamond's color is perceived. In 18k white gold or platinum, stones of G color and above look pure white, as the metal adds no tint to the reflected light. In yellow or rose gold, a D-F stone may even look slightly warmed, which often makes it unnecessary to pay the premium for the rarest colors — a good reason to direct the budget toward clarity or cut in that case.

FAQ: 1-carat lab-grown diamonds

Is a 1-carat lab-grown diamond really identical to a natural diamond of the same weight?
Yes, in every physical and chemical respect. The pure carbon composition, the cubic crystal structure, the refractive index and the hardness (10 on the Mohs scale) are strictly identical. The only difference is the origin: a laboratory for one, a mine for the other. A gemologist can only tell them apart with specialized equipment.

Which cut shape do you recommend for a 1-carat engagement ring?
The round brilliant remains the benchmark for its maximum brilliance and timeless character. If you want to maximize visual impact for the same budget, the oval is an excellent alternative: its elongated proportions enlarge the visible surface and lengthen the finger. The emerald cut will appeal to those who prefer clean, architectural lines.

Is it better to invest in color or clarity for a 1 carat?
As a general rule, for a white gold or platinum setting, we recommend prioritizing color (G-H minimum) and accepting a well-placed SI1 clarity. For a yellow or rose gold setting, an I-J color is perfectly suitable and frees up budget for better clarity or a superior cut.

Is an IGI-certified 1-carat lab-grown diamond as good as a GIA-certified one?
Both certifications are recognized and reliable. GIA has historically been the world reference and applies slightly stricter criteria, particularly in grading cut. IGI is very widely used for lab-grown diamonds and provides complete, rigorous certification. In both cases, certification guarantees traceability and the exact characteristics of the stone.

How much does a complete engagement ring with a 1 carat cost at Laveran Paris?
For an 18k gold solitaire ring with a 1-carat lab-grown diamond, expect €1,744 in H/VS2 quality, €2,096 in F/VS1 and €2,360 in D/VVS1, 18k gold setting included, whatever the shape. For a pavé, halo or custom setting, our experts will prepare a personalized quote.

Will the price of a 1-carat lab-grown diamond keep falling?
The downward trend continues, driven by innovations in HPHT and CVD processes and the growing number of producers worldwide. A decline of 5 to 10% per year is still expected over the coming years. Buying today nonetheless remains sensible: prices do not collapse overnight, and buying a piece of jewelry is first and foremost about emotion, not investment logic.
