What Are the Benefits and Virtues of Diamonds?

For centuries, the diamond has been regarded as a stone with many virtues. It is said to offer benefits on a physical level, but also on an emotional and spiritual one. It can also be paired with other minerals to strengthen its effect. Here we share all the virtues attributed to this most precious of stones.

History and legends surrounding the benefits of diamonds

Diamonds were first mined in India more than 4,000 years ago. Considered protective and lucky, the diamond adorned Indian religious objects. Warriors carried diamonds onto the battlefield for protection. In Buddhism, the stone symbolizes eternity. In Hinduism, it symbolizes indestructibility.

Since they came from deposits found in riverbeds, the people of India called the diamond the "fruit of the stars." They considered it a stone born of sacred sources.

Then, in Antiquity, the diamond became highly prized in other parts of the world, notably in Egypt, Greece and ancient Rome.

Natural rough diamond

It gained its reputation as an antidote to poison and was worn as a protective amulet. In Greco-Roman mythology, it was also associated with eternal love. It nevertheless continued to be used as a protective stone by warriors, granting strength and courage in battle. The diamond's hardness gave it this image of an invincible stone.

Etymologically, the diamond owes its name to the Latin "diamas," meaning "magnet." This is actually derived from the ancient Greek "adamas," meaning "untamable." The term referred to the hardest metals, from which the Greek gods were said to have had their weapons forged. And with good reason: with a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, the diamond is the hardest and most resistant stone in the world. It is this hardness that gives it its eternal character and its reputation as an indestructible stone.

Later, in the Middle Ages and then the Renaissance, the diamond kept its reputation as an antidote to poison. It was prized for royal crowns, alongside other precious stones. From the 11th century onward, diamond cutting began, revealing the facets and brilliance we associate with this fiery stone.

Throughout the centuries, the diamond has kept its status as a precious stone. Renowned for its brilliance, its longevity and its benefits, it is widely used today by jewelers. The diamond is also the most popular precious stone for engagement rings. It embodies longevity and eternal love. It also embodies integrity and purity, and therefore fidelity. This also explains its success for marriage proposals, although it is used in all kinds of jewelry.

In French tradition, the diamond is associated with the sixtieth wedding anniversary, known as the "noces de diamant" (diamond anniversary).

The production of lab-grown diamonds began in the 20th century, making it possible to produce stones whose composition is identical in every respect to that of natural diamonds.

The stone results from the crystallization of carbon atoms at very high pressures and temperatures. This process gives the diamond its crystalline structure, which has the particularity of reflecting every beam of light. Some beliefs even hold that it owes its origin to lightning.

In short, the diamond is a stone that has fascinated people for hundreds of years. Whether rough or cut, it is credited with both aesthetic qualities and the properties of a stone that stands the test of time. Today, it is used in a wide range of fields, including jewelry, fine jewelry and crystal healing (lithotherapy). It can be used on its own or in combination with other minerals.

The benefits and virtues of diamonds

Physical benefits

physical benefits of diamonds according to experts and cultures

The physical benefits attributed to diamonds have been known for centuries.

In Hinduism, the diamond is used as a mediator believed to have beneficial effects on all of the body's organs.

According to Hindu belief, a green diamond ring helps women in childbirth.

More generally, in India the diamond is considered a stone that aids fertility and childbirth. It is used throughout pregnancy, worn as a ring by the wealthiest women.

As mentioned above, the diamond is also considered an antidote to poison and is said to have the ability to detoxify and purify the body. Acting on the kidneys and liver, it is believed to limit the formation of kidney stones or gallstones. According to crystal healing, the diamond helps lower fever and regenerate cells. It is said to improve blood clotting and blood quality and to soothe insect stings, and would therefore help prevent heart problems. It is also said to support sleep quality, especially falling asleep, thanks to its soothing properties. As a protective stone, it is believed to ward off nightmares and anxiety. Finally, it is also said to strengthen the immune system.

It is also said to amplify the virtues of other stones or minerals nearby. In particular, it is recommended to pair the diamond with:

  • an amethyst or a rock crystal. Like the diamond, these two stones act on the crown chakra, located at the top of the head. Combining them helps balance it more quickly.

  • an azurite, which, combined with the diamond, acts on the same chakra to bring intelligence and wisdom.

Crystal healing practitioners thus recommend diamond powder in a bath or as a drink. It is said to be an excellent remedy for exhaustion, anemia and heart conditions. Diamond powder is said to promise a happy and prosperous life if the stone is pure. Be careful, however: if the stone is of poor quality or fake, the beneficial effects may be reversed.

In Chinese medicine, the diamond is used both for vision problems and for conditions such as sinusitis, rhinitis and allergies. It is also said to have an affinity with the liver and kidney meridians, which brings us back to the detoxifying virtues mentioned above.

In Ayurvedic medicine, diamonds are credited with rejuvenating and even aphrodisiac properties.

Overall, the diamond is thus said to have the ability to restore balance throughout the body. It can also multiply the effects of other minerals in its presence.

Psychological and emotional benefits

On a mental level, the diamond is said to bring courage, determination and confidence. It encourages creativity and clarifies thoughts.

As an energy amplifier, it guards against mental fatigue. It gives courage in difficult times and helps overcome fears and low spirits.

Be careful, however: in crystal healing, the diamond should be worn by people who are pure, ethical and beyond reproach, or its power may turn against them.

The spiritual meaning

The diamond resonates especially with two chakras:

  • the seventh, called the crown chakra, located at the fontanel at the top of the head. Once balanced, it harmonizes energies, helping you feel in your rightful place and keep life's events in perspective.

  • the fourth: the heart chakra, located on the sternum. The diamond is used there to harmonize the energies of the heart and body.

In short, the diamond has a wide range of qualities. Its exceptional beauty and brilliance make it the signature precious stone for engagement rings and for jewelry more generally. It is also credited with soothing and balancing virtues on a physical and emotional level. It is a recognized stone, widely used in crystal healing.

It belongs to the mineral family, like another well-known stone: the Herkimer diamond.

Spiritual meaning of natural diamonds

What is a Herkimer diamond?

Herkimer diamond quartz

Known in crystal healing for its virtues, the Herkimer diamond actually belongs to the quartz family. It is a unique variety of rock crystal.

Herkimer diamonds are small and luminous. They naturally have facets (flat surfaces that reflect light), whereas for real diamonds these are created by diamond cutters. This is what gives the Herkimer its name of diamond, even though it is actually a different stone.

The Herkimer diamond is a type of quartz whose vibration and energy amplification are said to be particularly powerful.

This stone amplifies the energy of its surroundings, especially that of the person wearing it. It is said to support overall healing of the body and to foster a mindset geared toward prosperity. Worn as a pendant, it is used in meditation and for all forms of spiritual self-work.

Like the real diamond, this stone has the ability to store light and give back its energy. It can therefore be charged with positive feelings such as love and well-being. Again like the real diamond, the Herkimer activates the chakras and harmonizes the body, bringing creativity, imagination and an overall balance of body, mind and their energies.

The real diamond is the birthstone for April. It is associated with the astrological sign of Aries. The Herkimer diamond pairs with every astrological sign, though it is said to be most effective for Taurus, Sagittarius and Libra.

To sum up, the diamond and the Herkimer diamond are two minerals used in crystal healing for relatively similar effects. They are also two stones widely used in jewelry for their brilliance. While the diamond is more often set in engagement rings, the Herkimer diamond is more often worn as a pendant.

Even so, both stones are used in every style of jewelry.
